Why Positive Thinking Can Be a Negative Thing
Sometimes people in our community can be overly dependent on positive thinking. We need to be real about how we actually feel.

Dealing with Difficult People
One student on the course complained about everything on the course. I mean literally every single thing. The way the essay questions were worded, everything. She constantly, ceaselessly criticised and found fault.
This was obviously frustrating for those of us who were trying to deliver the course. Another tutor had told her she should not come back, and I completely agreed with him. But she just saw this as something else to complain about.
With the wisdom that comes from experience and perspective, I now realise that this was an example of what I talk about in my book Success Strategies: Love always brings up its opposite for healing.
When we encounter something positive, or when we start to move towards our goals, we become more aware of what is getting in our way - our fears, anxieties and negative tendencies.
Our tendency is to blame others, but really, we need to look within and deal with our own negativity.
This is nothing to worry about. In fact, it is positive - the more aware we are of our negativity, the more we can deal with it, move forward and continue to make progress.
We all encounter difficult people from time to time. You may find that people around you become more difficult during the holiday season.
The important thing is to notice when we are the difficult ones.

Don't Freak Out
The problem with affirmations is that we don't get instant results. We can't just start doing affirmations and immediately see the kinds of results we want to see. So we get discouraged.
As soon as we start moving in a positive direction, we immediately become more aware of our negative thoughts, tendencies, habits and beliefs. They come up for us BIG TIME. But don't freak out. This is just part of the process.
You can use affirmations to improve your money situation, work and career, health, or in fact, any area of your life.

The Best, Most Highly Effective Strategies for Black People
I am going to cover some of the most effective, most powrful strategies we can use as people of African heritage.
(1) Know the power of your mind.
The human mind is incredibly powerful.
Black people have been brainwashed to believe that we don't have power - that all power rests in the hands of the white man, the white woman, the government, other people, etc.
You might think economic power lies in the hands of the banks, the stock market, or even the Bingo and lottery people. To read more about this, see: The Key to Financial Prosperity.
Yet, even when we deny our power, we still have it. You have the power to transform your life.
(2) Honour your history, your heritage and your ancestry.
When Europeans wanted to deny us our power, the first thing they did was to deny our history. Lies were told about our history and achievements. For example, white historians said that Great Zimbabwe must have been built by interplanetary travellers!
Malidoma Some
He makes the point that all African leaders were educated in the same way.
This accounts for a lot of the corruption that is perpetrated by African politicians.
The second half of the book describes how he healed himself of his early experiences by reclaiming his traditions.
When you understand what was done to Black people, and the damage we have suffered, you begin to understand why we are not achieving our full potential.
We are the only ones who can repair the damage, and we have the power toheal ourselfs.

NVC – How to Get our Needs Met
Many of us think “I shouldn’t use hurtful language” because “nice people don’t say or think these things”. Some of us may even think, “I am a bad person because I say/think these things”.
Marshall Rosenberg, the creator of Creative Communication/NVC, says, and I truly believe, that everything we do is done in order to try to get our needs met.
Everything anybody does is done in order to try to get their needs met. Or, to use Marshall’s definition of “needs”, everything we do and everything anybody does, is done in order to connect with life.
The problem is that the strategies people use to get their needs met are often not life-affirming.
