Where Are the Positive Images of Black Families?

When I was a child growing up in the '60s, I recall Valentine's Day being about more than romantic love. It was not just for couples. Valentine's Day celebrated love in all its forms, including the love of parents for their children, the love of family, and the love which is found in friendships.

As Joan E. Gosier, author of Cotton Pickin' Paycheck, writes in More Black Success Volume 5, where are the positive images of Black families?

Where are the images of normal, healthy Black families with two parents?

This is one of the questions addressed in the film Happily Ever After: A Positive Image of Black Marriage, which was screened by Black History Studies last night in London.

The film contains a series of interviews with couples talking about their experiences of marriage, in which they share the joys as well as the challenges of marriage.

See also: What Is Black Love?

The couples talk about the importance of having the Obamas as role models of a happy, loving and stable couple and family.

One person refers to a 12-year-old boy who has been quoted as saying "Marriage is for white people".

The film makes the point that, if we have never seen something, we are unlikely to aspire to it.

Visualization is so important for our development. If you can see it, you can be it. I talk about this in my book Success Strategies for Black People.

This is why we need to have positive images in Black literature, film, and every art form.

This is also one reason why it is vital for us to learn about Black history. It is vital for us to know about Black achievers, past and present, and about those who have challenged injustice and oppression.

If you have not seen Happily Ever After: A Positive Image of Black Marriage, I urge you to see it.

What Is Black Love?

This month's Ebony focuses on Black love. And it's great to see President and Mrs. Obama on the cover as an example of Black love.

What is Black love?

Ebony says: "There is enormous energy in every apology delivered, every truth uttered, every embrace held, every abuse checked, every vow honored ...".

To read more, see What Is Black Love?

I think what Des O'Connor is doing is brilliant. To read more, see: Why Can't Successful Black Women Find Good Black Men?

He is helping single Black men and women to meet each other.

But what happens after they meet?

We need to ask some hard questions.

Why do we have such a high incidence of divorce and relationship breakdown in our communities?

Why are so many Black children growing up in single-parent families?

And what are the consequences of this for us as individuals? For our communities? For our children?

We have so much healing to do.

For more info, see "How to Get What You Want in Your Relationships".

Repeal of Healthcare Reform

Got this email today from President Obama's office. The text is below.

Many of us saw this coming, but of course, the Senate would have to vote for repeal as well for this to take effect. And that's unlikely to happen.

The people who would suffer most from repeal of healthcare reform are the most vulnerable members of society - Black people, homeless people, people on low incomes, the elderly, and children.

This is the text of the email

At 5:53 p.m. Eastern Time today, the House moved to repeal health insurance reform.

Every single Republican -- all 242 -- voted for repeal.

This is a vote for insurance companies. There is no other way to put it.

Because if the question is what is best for Americans, repeal would never come up: Health reform is already at work improving the lives of millions of people. Repeal will result in 32 million fewer Americans with health coverage -- and add $230 billion to the deficit over the next 10 years.

Republicans in Congress need to know there's a political price to pay for siding with special interests over the constituents in their districts.

We're putting together a dedicated team of organizers and volunteers across the country to protect our progress on health reform -- and we need 2 donations from Pope Valley to make sure they have the resources they need.

Chip in $3 or more to support Organizing for America and help stop repeal before it's too late.

The Future for Black Boys

One of our guests on What U Need to Know on Saturday, Theron J. Jackson, author of Never Be Nothin, talked about his experience of having been told in 5th grade "You'll never be nothing". He was told this by a Black woman teacher. Click here to listen to the show.

I use the term "teacher" advisedly.

One of the many challenges faced by our Black boys and young men is that many are being raised in an environment where they have no positive male role models. One result of this is that many of them are lost in the education system and end up in the criminal justice system.

Although our guest was speaking about African American boys, we see the exact same things happening in the UK.

Although being raised without positive male role models is not the only reason for this problem, the lack of role models does have an effect.

I think girls as well as boys need positive male role models.

This is why I published Black Success Stories Volume 1.

Many of those interviewed in the book speak about educating our young people, and the duties and responsibilities of Black parents.

Kwanzaa Events 2010

Kwanzaa is a festival which is observed from December 26 through January 1. This is an opportunity for people of African heritage to focus on traditional African values including family, community responsibility, creativity and faith. The word Kwanzaa means "first fruits" in Swahili.

Preserving our cultural heritage is particularly important for those of us from the African Diaspora, as our heritage was stolen from us.Celebrating Kwanzaa is a way of reclaiming our identity, our ancestral heritage and our sense of self.

To read more, see: Kwanzaa - Celebrating Traditional African Values.

The Spiritual Dimension of Kwanzaa

One of the many attractive aspects of Kwanzaa, the African American holiday celebrated December 26th through January 1st, is its spiritual feature. Although Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday, it nevertheless has a spiritual dimension.

Spirituality is defined here broadly speaking as the highest values which humans aspire to attain, is expressed in the values, concepts and themes of Kwanzaa.

Dealing with Difficult People

Success Strategies for Black PeopleMany years ago, I was teaching a Study Skills module on a Black Studies course for adults.

One student on the course complained about everything on the course. I mean literally every single thing. The way the essay questions were worded, everything. She constantly, ceaselessly criticised and found fault.

This was obviously frustrating for those of us who were trying to deliver the course. Another tutor had told her she should not come back, and I completely agreed with him. But she just saw this as something else to complain about.

With the wisdom that comes from experience and perspective, I now realise that this was an example of what I talk about in my book Success Strategies: Love always brings up its opposite for healing.

When we encounter something positive, or when we start to move towards our goals, we become more aware of what is getting in our way - our fears, anxieties and negative tendencies.

Our tendency is to blame others, but really, we need to look within and deal with our own negativity.

This is nothing to worry about. In fact, it is positive - the more aware we are of our negativity, the more we can deal with it, move forward and continue to make progress.

We all encounter difficult people from time to time. You may find that people around you become more difficult during the holiday season.

The important thing is to notice when we are the difficult ones.

Hunger in America

I have recently seen this lens, Hungry in America.

One in six Americans are at risk for hunger. There has been a dramatic rise - 50% - in the number of children at risk for hunger in America. Click here to read more.

I suspect that the percentage is higher for African Americans.

Obviously, in other countries, the figure is much higher.

In Haiti, in 2008 - before the earthquake - mud pies had become the staple diet for many people. Click here to read more.

When I say we can turn this around, the message is actually much more urgent than this. We need globsl prosperity, and it is achievable. We MUST turn this around.

Students to March Again Today

Students will be marching again today in London and other cities around Britain, in protest against the proposed rise in tuition fees. School children may be joining the protests.

It seems at last the youth of the majority population are becoming politicised.

The coalition government plans to remove the current cap on tuition fees of £3,000 per year.

This is something that affects everyone. It affects the entire future of this country. It could put the cost of education out of reach of most people.

Many commentators have predicted there will be a lot more protests and a lot more violence, similar to what has been seen in France, as the coalition government's plans kick in over the next few months.

I don't disagree, as people are angry, anxious and worried about the future. But it doesn't have to be this way. See also: We Can Turn This Around

Don't Freak Out

Affirmations are positive statements which we can use to help us achieve our goals.

The problem with affirmations is that we don't get instant results. We can't just start doing affirmations and immediately see the kinds of results we want to see. So we get discouraged.

As soon as we start moving in a positive direction, we immediately become more aware of our negative thoughts, tendencies, habits and beliefs. They come up for us BIG TIME. But don't freak out. This is just part of the process.

You can use affirmations to improve your money situation, work and career, health, or in fact, any area of your life.

You are in charge. Your future is in your hands.

Why Do We Never Talk about This?

People from Africa often talk about the corruption in their countries, the corrupt governments. But they rarely mention the fact that it was European intervention that allowed corrupt governments to rise and flourish.

People from the Diaspora talk about slavery and the effects of Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome. But we are often unaware of what happened in Africa.

How many people know that the first German death camp was built in Namibia in 1905?

Or that the British in Kenya slaughtered thousands of people, stole their land, and relegated the remaining Kenyans to menial jobs? Or that Teddy Roosevelt said that the same people who did well in the old West would do well in Kenya?

How many people know that people in Nigeria were enslaved and forced to work for the British armed forces during the Second World War?
